A maritime rescue operation was launched south of the island of Gavdos after a vessel carrying 40 migrants was spotted in distress. The individuals were safely recovered by a passing cargo ship flying the Hong Kong flag and are currently being transported to the port of Gavdos for processing. Local authorities and the Hellenic Coast Guard are managing the situation, which remains a recurring logistical challenge for the southernmost point of Europe.
