Panos Gavalas

Panos Gavalas was born on November 26, 1926 in Athens. Starting from an early age he loved music and learned to play various instruments including the guitar, harmonica and bouzouki. He also began to sing but started his professional career in the early ’50s, a time when artists were popular Stratos Paioumtzis, Prodromos Tsaousakis, Stelios Kazantzidis, Grigoris Bit’ikotzis and more. Later he collaborated with Nikos Mimrakis and formed a band that played live military radio station of Greece.

The first song he recorded was “To Adiko” (“The Injustice”) by Kostas Kaplanis but did not become a hit. His biggest hit came in 1959 with the song “Glaroi”. Panos remains in the spotlight for more than 40 years. He performed duets with singer Voula Gkika and Ria Kourti. The first song the singer Vasilis Tsitanis brought him sing was “Katadikos Gia Panda”.

From 1954 to 1986 Panos Gavalas record more than 1,200 songs. During these years he appeared in 25 films and traveled throughout Europe, Australia and the United States. Most of the time he sat down in Athens. His wife Zoe, died in 1985. Panos Gavalas died on December 3, 1988.
